6. ΠΟΛΑΚΑ ΒΟΜΒΑΡΔΑ ΑΓΙΑ ΖΩΝΗ, 1908. Έργο Αριστείδη Γλύκα, υδατογραφία σε χαρτί, 45,5χ62 εκ. (πρβλ. με τους αρ. 14, 18 και 19 και βλ. τον Οδηγό, σελ.45). Το πλοίο, που εικονίζεται εδώ μέσα σε τρικυμία με μουδαρισμένα πανιά, έχει σκαρί βαρκαλά και αρματωσιά βομβάρδας. Το σκαρί έχει διακοσμημένη πρύμνη καθρέφτη και πλώρη μπαλτά με μπαστούνι και κόντρα μπαστούνι. Η αρματωσιά βομβάρδας με ράντα και φλίσι στη μετζάνα και με σταυρώσεις (τρίγκο, κάτω και άνω γάμπια, παπαφίγκο) πάνω στον πλωριό ιστό ήταν τόσο χαρακτηριστική αυτού του είδους σκαριού, ώστε να δώσει το όνομά της στο συνδυασμό σκαριού και αρματωσιάς και αργότερα στο ίδιο το σκαρί. Εντούτοις το πραγματικό όνομα αυτού του είδους σκαριού είναι βαρκαλάς.  Όπως φαίνεται εδώ, τα τρία άνω πινά πάνω από τη μαΐστρα (τρίγκο) γλιστρούσαν κατά μήκος του μοπινό. Ο παπαφίγκος και η άνω γάμπια, ο έξω φλόκος και το φλοκίνι είναι μαζεμένα. Η ράντα, το βελαστράλι και ο κόντρα φλόκος είναι μουδαρισμένοι λόγω τρικυμίας. Σύμφωνα με ορισμένες πηγές, ο βαρκαλάς και η βομβάρδα αποτελούν διαφορετικά είδη σκαριού.

6. POLACCA KETCH-BRIGANTINE AGIA ZONI ("Holy Girdle"), painted 1908, by Ar. Glykas, water-colour on paper, 45,5x62 cm. (compare with Nos. 14, 18 and 19; see Guide, p. 45). The ship shown here with its sails reefed in a storm has a varkalas hull and vomvarda rig. The hull has an ornamented square-transom stern and a straight raking bow; the rig, with a gaff sail and its topsail on the mizzen and with square sails (fore course, lower and upper topsail, and topgallant sail) on the main (forward) mast, was so typical of this hull form that it gave its name to the combination of hull and rig and then to the hull alone, although the proper name for this hull form is varkalas.  As shown here, the upper 3 yards above the main (fore) course slid along the single-pole mast, so that the crew had to climb no higher than the lowermost yard. The topgallant sail and upper topsail, outer and flying jib are furled; the mizzen spanker, mizzen lower staysail and inner jib are reefed, in this stormy scene. (Some authorities and sources consider the varkalas and vomvarda to be distinct and separate hull types; in their interpretation, this is a vomvarda hull.)
