60. ΟΜΟΙΩΜΑ ΤΡΕΧΑΝΤΗΡΙΟΥ, αχρονολόγητο. Έργο Α. Πόλια. Πρόκειται για ένα ιδιότυπο αλλά σε γενικές γραμμές ακριβές διακοσμητικό μοντέλο με σκαρί τρεχαντηριού και αρματωσιά ράντας (ράντα με μάτσα και φλόκο). Όπως στην ουσία όλα τα σημερινά καΐκια, έτσι κι αυτός ο μικρός, παράκτιος και μικρών γραμμών μεταφορέας εμπορευμάτων διαθέτει κινητήρα ντίζελ ενώ τα πανιά σπάνια ανοίγονται. Το τρεχαντήρι (από το ρήμα «τρέχω») είναι ίσως το μοναδικό παραδοσιακό είδος καϊκιού το οποίο δεν κινδυνεύει να εκλείψει. Μπορούμε εύκολα να το αναγνωρίσουμε χάρη στην κυρτή προς τα μπρος στρογγυλή του πλώρη, την οξεία πρύμνη με το ευθύ κεκλιμένο πρυμιό ποδόστημα και το εξωτερικό τιμόνι, καθώς και την έντονη καμπύλη της κουβέρτας και της κουπαστής. Η μικρή βάρκα του πλοίου είναι στοιβαγμένη ανάποδα, πάνω από το μοναδικό αμπάρι, σαν να πρόκειται να φύγει το πλοίο για μεγάλο ταξίδι. Σε μικρά ταξίδια η βάρκα ρυμουλκείται. Τα σημερινά καΐκια, αντί να είναι λουστραρισμένα όπως το συγκεκριμένο αλλά και πολλά άλλα ομοιώματα, έχουν χρωματιστές τσάπες, παραπέτα, κουπαστές καθώς και άλλες ζώνες.

60. MODEL OF TREHANDIRI CAÏQUE, undated, by A. Polias. This is a somewhat fanciful but generally accurate decorative display model of a trehandiri hull with a randa rig: boomed gaff mainsail and jib. Like virtually all present-day caïques, this small coastal and interisland freighter is powered by diesel motor, with sails, if present, hardly ever set. The trehandiri (from the verb treho, "run"), is the only traditional ca•que type that seems in no danger of extinction; it can be easily recognized by its convex-forward curved "spoon" bow, its sharp stern with straight raking sternpost and outboard (stern-hung) rudder mounted on it, and the pronounced sheer curve of its deck and bulwark caprail. The small ship' s boat is stowed upside down on the single hatch, for a long passage; on a short trip, it would be towed. Instead of being varnished, like this and many other models, actual caïques are colourfully painted with contrasting wales, bulwarks, caprails and other zones. This model has the deep hull of older sailing caïques, for a better "grip" on the water; todayΥs craft are wider and shallower for more efficient motoring.
